Hi All,

In my organization we have lot of WINS servers installed in different
sites. Due to non proper naming standards it is verry difficult to
identify the WINS server details. Is there any command or any option
to find the entire list of WINS servers in a Domain ??

How about querying servers (through powershell) for the WINS service to see
if it is installed or not?

Cheers,

Agreed with Jorge ;-)

You can adjust the operatingsystem attribite if you don't have any 2000
WINS servers (actually we do have).
To narrow down the search, you can define the searchbase using -SearchBase
parameter.

$complist = Get-ADComputer -Filter {(OperatingSystem -like "Server 2000")
-or (OperatingSystem -like "Server 2003")} | `
Select-Object -ExpandProperty Name
foreach($comp in $complist)
{
if(Get-Service -Name WINS -ComputerName $comp)
{
Write-Host "WINS Service Is Installed on $comp" -ForegroundColor Green
}
else
{
Write-Host "WINS Service Is Not Installed on $comp" -ForegroundColor Red
}
}

That probably means that there aren't dependencies on the
organisation-wide WINS. Instead of trying to document the mess, I'd
reconfigure every system in CMDB with a pair of main WINS severs,
re-register NetBIOS names, and would have much cleaner picture from that
point on.
