Programmatic access to Office 365 resources

We have a project where we are pulling calendar data from our Office 365 instance to format and display on a on-prem web site. We've have the code sorted out for extracting the data. What we are running into is authenticating against O365 / ADFS to get to the data. All of the examples that we can find are for web apps that redirect the browser to ADFS and then O365.

What I think we want to do is have our program get a ADFS cookie, post that to a O365 endpoint that gives me the OAuth token, and then be able to use that to get our O365 data.

Has anyone done something like this? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Are you using the REST APIs or are you using EWS?
