Three words you hope to never come across in any meaningful situation.  I am curious as to what people have in place for this? We use Dell RMAD FE in some environments and I am fan of it but the licesning costs are huge if you have a large user base. Are there any better or cheaper products on the market?  Do you simply rely on the standard MS step by step procedure?

Have a look at Semperis, we are moving away from RMAD. This really is a simple product to use.

I have scripted a recovery of the forest using the MS method and it works but it requires some hand holding.

We had a demo given to us and one thing that piqued my interest (even though we decided not to buy the product) was the virtual environment (ADVIL) it could spin

up. Did you ever use that?

You can do that with both of these products. Quest RMAD FE and Semperis. They are great for POC work or just for DR tests. They both can create clones in isolation.

We rely on a bespoke step-by-step based of the Microsoft official documentation. Each domain has a nominated DC, and the process is unique for that DC. The process is tested and updated twice a year. The full recovery, including the restore to disk for the entire forest (5 domains), takes about 4 hours for one DC in each domain, with all replicating, and all errors cleared.
If you want any more info, let me know.

Would like to know more about this. I have been trying to test the restore of system state backups of (Physical) DC in the VM in isolated environment

but couldn’t succeed and still working on it. I am failing on restoring the bare metal recovery….

Your backup should be a full backup and include the System State.

When doing a restore, start with a blank VM and start to install Windows, then look for the option it gives you to repair and use that option. Then point to the

backup.

Can you please share more, what are the benefits Semperis have over RMADFE?

I haven’t used any of those products. Thank you.

Up front proper disclosure: I’m the CTO of Semperis, so I’m a bit biased

J

In any case, if anyone on the DL is interested in hearing more about the product, feel free to approach me directly at

guyte@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and I will be more than happy to answer any questions or arrange a demo.

Cheers,

Guy,

Is the licensing model per AD user ?

As I am looking at alternatives to this approach.

We have various licensing models that can be applied and are yet to be in a situation where licensing model was a deal breaker.

In either case, let’s keep this DL technical. I’ll ping you offline.

Guy
