IIRC, DNS forwarder configuration is stored in the per-service configuration in the registry, not in AD.

My guess would be this: since you can use AD replication to replicate forwarders information, the forwarders are stored as AD object. In your case the objects representing the forwarder might have been already present in AD database before you promoted the DC.

I just noticed that when u promote a 2008R2 DC, forwarders are added to it automatically in the DNS mgmt. console . Similar issue is reported here.. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverDS/thread/f5341d6f-154e-454e-8238-210b60d60f31

Just curious if anyone experienced this and know what is the cause ? perhaps where can I look for possible cause ?
